It’s Dangerous To Drain a Swimming Pool

If you live in the Phoenix area, you’re probably quite familiar with how hard our tap water is. In fact, the calcium levels coming out of the tap is some of the hardest you will find in the country! If you’ve seen calcium buildup on your showerheads, countertops and your car when you park near sprinklers have you ever thought about what this might be doing to your swimming pool? High levels of Calcium Hardness (CH) will scale your water tile line, interior finish, filtration equipment, and your decorative water features if you don’t keep the levels low. That’s why most pool professionals will recommend a drain a refill when your calcium levels get too high. Depending on where you take your pool water they will also recommend a drain and refill if your Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) or Cyanuric Acid (CYA) levels are high too. That’s why if anyone recommends a drain a refill we want to make you aware of the dangers that are involved. The following are the most common that we deal with in the Phoenix area:

  • In-ground concrete pools are structurally built to withstand the weight of the water pushing outward on the shell, and that water weight helps keep the shell in the ground. However, if the groundwater is high enough, it can actually push the entire pool out of the ground.  Once a pool has popped out of the ground it can’t go back down!
  • In-ground concrete swimming pool finishes (plaster) can also crack when the temperature is above 80 degrees and the surface of the swimming pool doesn’t remain wet.  Swimming pool plaster has been wet since the day it was installed (it cures underwater) and contracts when the water is taken away.  Once this finish rehydrates, it expands and the risk of delamination occurs.
  • If you happen to own a vinyl or fiberglass pool the risks increase even more

So this begs the question to all residential and commercial swimming pool owners in the Phoenix area….. Why would you want to drain your swimming pool when there is a much better option? At Foothills Poolwater Revival, we offer The Puripool Process which is an alternative to draining and filling a swimming pool in the Phoenix area. We utilize Reverse Osmosis (RO) filtration to lower calcium, TDS, CYA, phosphates, salts, and waterborne diseases without draining the swimming pool. This means that the interior finish is never exposed which takes all the risks out of using our service! This alternative to a drain and refill will not only give you the best water quality to swim in but also a much better swim experience. If our service is utilized every couple of years it can lower the risk of calcium scaling and help to prolong the lifespan of your swimming pool. So, our question to you is, why drain, when you can recycle the water instead?
